The ReEducation Project

The ReEducation Project is built to document the complexity that exists in the lives of black women. Like other people in the world, black women develop and evolve as individuals and as groups. One black woman is not a representative for all black women. We are all different we have our own stories, different takes of life, we are just different. Yet mainstream media does not document our realities, rather they construct misconstrued caricatures that the rest of the world can easily internalize. Simplifying our existence to a few stereotypes minimizes our impact on the world and the steps we continue to take.

Simply interviewing women using their voices or a video of them is a vehicle to challenge the grander scheme of hegemonic systems that exist within the American culture. Intertwined with the testimonies of women from various places of life is articles, quotes, footage, gigs, pictures of other black women, which challenge societal norms. What is essential to project is the use of pop culture, history as well as studies that provides a historical link to the topics that are discussed within the interviews. Making factual/academic/historical references solidifies an experience in history.

ReEducation will be a showing to many females who are undergoing identity issues to have tangible realistic women to actually see and relate to. Being able to relate will encourage a confidence in future generations that there are girls and women who do look like who are living lives where they can choose to be happy as themselves.

Every two to three weeks there will another black woman who will be interviewed. Surrounding her interview, there will be links to article, pictures, videos, anything that can provide facts and an objective view of what is being discussed in the film.
