Empowering Young Women/Raising Daughters in New York

Empowering Young Women/Raising Daughters in New York

I began my project by starting up a Facebook page titled Raising Daughters in New York,  https://www.facebook.com/raisingdaughtersinnyc .  My page aims to mothers, sisters, and aunts, essentially all women who can encourage empowering teen girls.

I started this page mainly for mothers’ of teens who reside in NYC.  The goal is to work with other mothers who grew up in NYC before social media existed.  As a mother of a 18 and 13 year old, I believe that the constant interaction our teens have with Social Media has had somewhat of a negative impact on their self esteem and has caused them to constantly evaluate themselves emotionally. I feel that young women today, are growing up thinking and believing they must look, think, and feel a different way. They are influenced by advertising, social media and society in itself. Because life in NYC can be a bit more faced-paced and interaction with society can be tumultuous, as mothers raised here, I felt we needed a place to teach our daughters to be "street wise", to embrace themselves and to love who they are and maybe we can also empower each other in the interim.

To promote my page, I posted a small documentary I put together of my daughters each expressing and voicing what empowers them as well giving advice.

I truly believe that we learn from each other’s obstacles, trials and tribulations. The page is a judge free zone and nobody is obligated to disclose everything if they do not want to. I also encouraged mothers whose daughters are all grown up, to give us some of their guidance and experience. I have learned over the years that we all have battles we are fighting and it is time we stop trying to fight them on our own.
